chatting with a character

Posted on April 3, 2010

Hi, folks–hope you’re all well this first weekend of April. I get asked a lot whether I’m anything like K.C. Fontero, the main character in Land of Entrapment and The Ties that Bind.

How about we ask K.C. and find out? Go to  Women and Words to see.

Hope everyone is getting some great spring weather!

peace and hope your weekend is totally groove-a-licious.

Hi, folks–R. G. and I had a great time chatting with Lara Z on her show, “Readings in Lesbian and Bisexual Women’s Fiction.” We chatted about putting the anthology Skulls and Crossbones together, which is all about strong women, adventures, and a whole lotta piracy.

Searching for “Carrie”

Posted on May 23, 2009

Greetings, all–

I’m trying to locate “Carrie,” whose email handle is “othellokitty.” She won a copy of State of Denial over at Women and Words and we’ve been trying to get in touch with her for over a week with no success. I’m thinking my emails are getting shoved into her spam box…So if you know her, could you please pass along that Andi Marquette and Jove Belle are trying to reach her so I can hook her up with this copy of State that she won? She can contact me here at the Contact page.

Thanks, all!

Nice review of “State of Denial”

At Just About Write, which is a really cool site for readers and writers of lesfic and women’s fiction. Writing tips, author interviews, and book reviews. Oh, and calls for submissions and all kinds of groovy stuff like that.

Here’s the link to go to book reviews. Scroll down to “State” (unless you want to read the other ones, too, which is fine n’ dandy!).

Thanks for reading!

And don’t forget, you can purchase Land of Entrapment and State of Denial as ebooks, too. The links are available two posts back or on my “Books” page here on my site. Good news–Land picked up a groovy endorsement from Fran Fuller at Seattle Mystery Bookshop. This from their “Newzine”:

Plus, I’m totally pimping Joan Opyr, whose latest is just about out! WOOOOOO! Go, JOAN!!!!!

Firebrand Books

Posted on December 22, 2008

Hey, all–for those of you who dig lesbian fiction and/or feminist (not necessarily lesbian), have a look at Firebrand Books. They’re based in Ann Arbor, MI an publish fiction, poetry, and nonfiction. Alison Bechdel‘s Dykes To Watch Out For is published by this award-winning house, along with works by Audre Lorde and Leslie Feinberg.

You’ll also find other cool stuff like mysteries by Ojibwe author Carol laFavor, who writes about Ojibwe detective Renee LaRoche and Rachel Guido Devries’ Tender Warrior, about an Italian-American working-class family.

So take a little sidetrip away from the usual suspects and give Firebrand a try.

Peace out and hope everyone is chill before the holly-daze!

Be a better writer. Read.

Posted on November 28, 2008

Hi, all! It’s the day after Thanksgiving here in the States and I’m chillin’ because I have a horrible aversion to the holiday season. So I’m getting caught up on my reading. Why?

Aside from the obvious (it transports me, allows me immersion in other places, times, and cultures), it helps me write better.

I’ll let James Bow explain.

Every teacher I’ve had who loved the written word and who encouraged writing read copiously. Across genres. As many different writers as they could. From reading, you develop an inherent sense of how writing works, of how good grammar, syntax, and spelling operate. The more you read, the more that sense of how things should work embed themselves in your brain. Read genres you don’t normally read. Pick up some nonfiction and read that. Read some of the best journalists who publish their work in venues like Rolling Stone, National Geographic, Adventure, and Outside. Check out literary journals for some of the best cutting-edge fiction out there.

Be curious. Try new things.

And read.

Hope your Friday’s going well.
