Sky is a single mother struggling to support herself and Drake, her blind son, with hardheaded determination and a waitress’ salary. When Sky learns she inherited a manor house, her family’s life is turned upside down. Meg watches Sky stumble through one doomed relationship after another with the wrong men, never daring to reveal the secret love she has for Sky. Meg is devastated after finding out about the move, but is pleasantly surprised when Sky asks her to move with them. The manor house is located in Green Grove, a town hidden away to anyone without magic in their blood. Not all the magic is good, however. The Sect, a dark magic group, wants Sky’s new home and Sacru Teren, a magical place her family is bound by blood to protect. Will this move be an opportunity for the women to discover their true feelings? What of the visions that Sky is experiencing since the move – are they memories from her past or influences from the darkness around her?

oooooo! Good luck!

Update on Amazon.com

Posted on April 16, 2009

Okay, all–

Amazon claims it was a “glitch”. Twitterverse continues its displeasure with #glitchmyass. Amazon  has released no further statements, has not apologized, nor can any reference to the situation be found on its mainpage.

For my take, and explanations of what’s going on in case you’ve been outta the loop for the past week, check my Outer Limits blog.

Thanks, all, for stopping by.

Amazon.com de-ranks thousands of books

Posted on April 12, 2009

The catch? Many of them contain gay, lesbian, and/or feminist content. Amazon has decided to remove the sales rankings from thousands of titles, many of which are considered “gay” or “lesbian.” When questioned, an Amazon spokesperson said that Amazon is doing that to titles that contain “adult” material and material that is “questionable” or “objectionable” to its readers. Never mind that some of these titles are children’s books with educational materials about gay and lesbian parents.

Removing the sales rankings from books has huge ramifications for search engines. Books that are de-ranked fall way down, which means that this policy is also removing the visibility of certain titles.

Check out this blog for more links and information about what you can do, including a Google bomb link.

Censorship is un-American. And it’s wrong. Whatever your feelings on the content of some books, censorship hurts us all.

proper writing fuel

Posted on April 7, 2009

Hi, all! Hope your week is going well.

I write with coffee. That is, I generally have a beverage handy. When I first start a writing session, I’ll have a cup of coffee. No, I don’t drink an entire pot. More like a cup/cup-and-a-half. I try not to get out of hand. I can also be pretty particular about the coffee I brew. I’m aware that for the perfect cup, you need really good equipment and perfect water and you have to do specific things at timed intervals. I’m sure that if I allowed myself to get really super anal about that, I’d probably drop a little fortune on coffee accoutrements.

However, I’m okay settling for decent coffee and the equipment I have on hand.

I live in a high mountain river valley in Colorado, reasonably close to a really good coffee roastery. So I just walk four blocks to the local branch of t his local roastery, and get myself some good coffee, ground however I want (or not ground at all). And I really like supporting local companies.

Here’s my proper writing fuel.

I’m not saying a good cup of coffee makes me a better writer. But it sure makes me want to try.

Peace!

Sky Hawthorn is a single mother struggling to support herself and Drake, her blind son, on a waitress’ salary and hardheaded determination. When a lawyer arrives to tell Sky that an aunt she never knew has left her a manor house, her family’s life is turned upside down and Sky is left with a big choice to make.

Meg has spent years watching Sky stumble through one doomed relationship after another with the wrong men, never daring to reveal the secret love she has for Sky. When Meg finds out about the move she is devastated, but to her surprise Sky asks her to come with them to Green Grove. Meg agrees.

Hidden away in northern Wisconsin, inaccessible to anyone without magic in their blood, Green Grove’s secrets prove to be big ones. There’s a dark underbelly to the friendly town called the Sect, and they want Sky’s home and the magical place called Sacru Teren, that her family is bound by blood to protect.

With the arrival of Roger Thompson, charming local doctor that seems determined to sweep Sky off her feet, Meg is left with little but jealousy and doubt. Will the handsome doctor steal away their chance to be happy together, or will visions of Sky’s past and the dark secret that past holds change everything?
