WOOO! Win a copy of “Friends in High Places”!

Posted on July 14, 2009

Greetings, all–

I’m giving away a copy of Friends in High Places over at Women and Words.

cover, friends in high places

Here’s the synopsis (which is also available here on my site):

Torri Rendego buried her Academy past and military training when the Empire collapsed and the hated Coalition came to power. She’s been making a pretty good living since she went underground. She and her crew run shipments of whatever products her clients want–most often, illegal. The latest contract brings her and the crew of the Far Seek to the mining colony of Newburg on Old Earth, where she somehow has to acquire a shipment of highly prized black opals for a client who may or may not be Coalition, beneath the scrutiny of increased Coalition security. But somebody’s messing with the markets, which puts Torri and her crew in a dangerous position and in the seething streets of Newburg, where everyone’s on the take, knowing who to trust is often a matter of life and death. Torri’s good at what she does, and she enjoys outsmarting the Coalition every chance she has, but she certainly doesn’t count on Kai Tinsdale, her closest Academy colleague, being assigned to Newburg as part of the elite teams breaking up smuggling rings. Kai and Torri share a bond forged years earlier during their Academy days but as the Coalition rose to power, Kai chose to remain in the military, and thus under Coalition directive. In spite of the political gulf between them, Torri and Kai have managed to maintain a connection, but that fragile truce will be put to another test in the mean streets of Newburg and in the hot, dark mines beneath.

Then, of course we’re supposed to supply all our information for our fabulous prize. Our response:

“WOOO HOOOOO!

Put the money in a black suitcase in small, unmarked bills and hurl it over the side of the Queen Mary exactly 567.7 kilometers from Boston. A submarine will retrieve it and ensure that it’s genuine British pounds you’re giving us. And then hire an editor. Oh, what a coincidence. We are not only pirates, but we’re editors. Hmmm. We’d be happy to edit your spams for $500,000.”

Ah, spam. It breaks up a hum-drum day. We like it with cheese.

cover, Year's Best Lesbian Fiction 2008

Wow. Who knew when I wrote that story that it’d get into this volume? I mean, I wrote it originally for an author challenge over on the Radclyffe Yahoo list, and holy moley, it’s become the basis for a space opera series for which Friends in High Places is the first installment. You can read it in the Year’s Best, or get your hands on a copy of Friends. “Games” is included in that, as well. And check out the offerings by the other authors in Year’s Best. Seriously. That is a heck of a line-up.

Happy reading!

Exhausted, she returns stateside to recover. However, life at home is not the sanctuary it has always been. Her name is on an Iraqi hit list, her partner of ten years has left, she is betrayed by a friend, and her TV network wants the FBI in her life full time. When the danger escalates, senior FBI agent Sarah Moore is assigned to her case.
