About

I was born in Albuquerque and grew up in Colorado. After a couple of academic degrees (B.A. and M.A. in anthropology), I put some time in on surveys and excavations as an archaeologist. Eventually I wandered back to Albuquerque and completed a Ph.D. in history. I fell into editing in 1993 and I’ve been obsessed with words ever since. That may or may not be a good thing. I currently reside in Colorado–after an attempt to live east of the Mississippi–where I edit, write, and cultivate a strange obsession with New Mexico chile.

I’ve been writing most of my life. I wrote my first novel in high school and then followed that with an equally atrocious sequel. I wrote novels and short stories–mostly speculative fiction–until around 1992, when I started writing a contemporary mystery. But the rigors of doctoral work funneled me into nonfiction, and I spent years doing that, until the muses came calling and I started writing fiction again, putting myself in their hands. They’re a demanding lot, but I’m so grateful for their inspiration and for all the fun I’m having on this journey. Thanks for stopping by and sharing a bit of it.
