Interview

Well, been a busy week, friends. My apologies for not checking in sooner.

I done went and got myself interviewed by Liz McMullen on her fab Liz McMullen Show. There you’ll hear me talk about random things about my writing (and not) and do a reading of a work-in-progress. THAT’S RIGHT, people. A reading from the 4th NM mystery, which I’m slamming on and hoping to send to the publisher in June.

And Liz and I are running a book giveaway, in honor of my interview. But you have to answer a question. If you’re read the New Mexico series (particularly State of Denial), you should get this one. Here’s the link to the interview again, for instructions on how to enter and where to send your answer and all that good stuff.

Anyway, the fourth NM book is a Chris Gutierrez mystery (Chris gets even-numbered books and K.C. gets odd-numbered books), so hope you decide to go check the interview and reading out. For more info about my mysteries (including excerpts and where to buy), click here. C’mon. You know you want to.

I also JUST released my latest romance novella, From the Boots Up, on Kindle. Go have a looksee. Might be right up your alley. If you’re not sure, well guess what? It’s free on St. Patrick’s Day. YES! Grab a green beer (or not), your Kindle, and head on over to Amazon for some “Boots” on that day.

And as always, for the haps in the world of lesfic/books with strong women characters, head over to Women and Words. You’re sure to find SOMETHING you like there.

Happy Friday!

From the Boots Up is now available on Kindle

And…we’re off, people!

Amazon was kind of awesome last night and got my latest novella loaded pretty quickly. Thanks, Amazon! That would be From the Boots Up, and you can go see what’s up with it at the handy-dandy linkie below:

From the Boots Up on Kindle

I’m always excited about new releases, but I’m also kind of angst-ridden. I blogged about that over at Women and Words yesterday, if you want to get inside a writer’s brain when it comes to new releases and writer angst (speaking for myself). But I am really stoked about this release. I’ve spent a long time with these characters, and I’m hoping you enjoy their company as much as I have.

My latest novella: From the Boots Up

Well, lookie here, peeps.

I’ll be releasing my latest novella, From the Boots Up, on Kindle this weekend. Barring a zombie apocalypse, at any rate.

Pre-vet college student Meg Tallmadge comes home to southern Wyoming in May 1999 like she has every summer since she started school to help her father Stan run the family ranch. He’s managed to get the Los Angeles Times to send a reporter out to do a story on the Diamond Rock, which doubles as a dude ranch. Meg knows the ranch needs all the publicity it can get to bring in more customers, but she’s not looking forward to babysitting a reporter for a week. When the originally scheduled reporter can’t make it, Meg worries that they won’t get a story at all, which is worse than dealing with a city slicker for a few days. Fortunately for Stan and the ranch, the Times finds a replacement, and Meg prepares to be under scrutiny, under the gun, and the perfect hostess. She knows what this opportunity means to her father, and she’s hoping that if it goes well, it’ll ease some of the tension between them as a result of her coming out a few months earlier. What she’s not prepared for — and never expected — is the reporter herself and the effect she has on her.

In spite of what she feels, Meg can’t risk the fallout that could result from overstepping a professional boundary. But as the week draws to a close, she learns that not taking a chance becomes the biggest risk of all.

There you go. Yer handy preview. And just so you know, this pup contains adult language and situations. So don’t say you weren’t warned. 😀

I’ll post again when it’s LIVE, so you can go ponder whether you would like to add it to your Kindle stable. Here’s hoping you do. In the meantime, happy reading, happy writing, and happy Thursday!

Happy New Year!

Well. Happy New Year, everyone! I wrote some longer and perhaps more provocative thoughts HERE, if you’re interested.

Here’s what I’m up to, in the coming year:

Book 3 of the Far Seek Chronicles is at the publisher. I expect I’ll be going through proofs of it around the end of January or perhaps February. At that point, I’ll post an excerpt here on my site. I’m hoping for a publication date come March/April, if the stars align correctly.

I am hammering away at NM 4 (book 4 in my mystery series). I’m probably 2/3 through, but some of the scenes at the beginning I’m re-working. I’m hoping to send that off to the publisher this spring, for a possible fall/winter publication date.

I’m also finishing up a romance. What’s that, you say? Andi is writing a novel-length romance? WTF? It’s true. You can catch some excerpts from it here, in this order: ONE, TWO, THREE

I’m also re-tooling a romance novella that I hope to make available on Kindle this spring. Stay tuned for that, friends. 😀

I also have a couple other genres up my sleeve that I’ve been working on. MUAH HA HA. Hope you stick around.

And yes, I know. It’s been a while since I published a novel. Well, life happens, and sometimes you have to put some things aside in order to deal with what’s thrown at you. Since about May of 2011 life has thrown me quite a lot, but that’s just how things go. I think I’m saddled up again.

Having said that, I want to wish all of you a happy, happy new year and may you have a year filled with good works and good times with friends and family.

Cheers! And remember, The Walking Dead starts up again February 10th. . .

What’s going on: Hootenanny and projects

Hey, peeps —

‘Scuse my absence. I’ve been mondo busy because we are putting on another Hootenanny at Women and Words this year.

For those of you not in the know, we did a Hootenanny in 2010. That is, for 12 days, we did nothing but give books away to spread holiday luuuuuv and cheer. Probably 5-8 books every single day for 12 days.

We’re doing it again this year, and we’re giving away even MORE books. Hit the link above for the list of authors and how it works. So I’ve been working with my colleague Jove Belle on that, and coordinating with authors and getting the stuff ready because we launch that pup next week. December 12th, my friends. Go git yew some.

Also, just so you know, I finished the manuscript for the third Far Seek book. It’ll be off to the publisher this weekend. I’m hard at work on New Mexico 4 (which features Chris Gutierrez), and hope to have that finished in the next 3-4 months. And then I’ve got some romances in the pipeline, including another novella for Kindle. 😀

And, in case you wanted to get in on a discussion about erotica as a genre, I posted “Respect the Sex!” today over at Women and Words.

I know. Things are crazy this time of year. Here. Have a reminder about things I’ve learned to help get through the holidays.

All right, all. Happy reading, happy writing, happy Friday!

Helpful writing links plus some other stuff

Hey, kids–

Tomorrow, join me and author Michael Chavez over at Women and Words. We’ll be chatting about his work and he’ll also be giving away a copy of his first novel, Creed. Come on by and hang out with us!

And other stuff I’ve found that I’m going to pass on to you:

Writing sidekicks and henchmen, by author Sophie Masson. I love to write strong secondary characters, so I dug this post. Read the comments, too, because there are other examples and tips in there.

Let’s talk (ha ha) about dialogue! Yet another useful post from author Catherine McKenzie: 10 tips for writing impactful dialogue.

Here’s one of my earlier posts on dialogue, for more tips. I think dialogue is super hard to do well, so any time I see a blog about tips for writing it, I’m all over it.

Are you guys familiar with literary agent Sara Megibow? She’s with Nelson Literary in Denver, and does a greatly informative and fun Twitter feed (@SaraMegibow). Every Thursday ’til the end of the year, she does this thing on Thursdays on Twitter at the hashtag #10queriesin10tweets. Check it out. And follow her on Twitter, because she has great tips for approaching literary agents, writing query letters, and writing. Plus, she and the crew over at Nelson Literary are always doing helpful webinars. I highly recommend you get on their newsletter list.

Oh, and I just finished reading Berlin Noir by Philip Kerr, a collection of his first three Bernie Gunther detective novels. I’ll be doing a write-up on it at Goodreads soon, but in the meantime, check it out. This is hard-boiled noir, and it takes place in Nazi-era Berlin. Go have a looksee. If you’ve read it, I’d be interested to get your thoughts on it.

All rightie! Happy reading, happy writing!

More author interviews coming up at Women and Words!

Hi, kids!

OMG this week has been crazy bizzy. But don’t worry! The Summer Blast Tour has morphed into the Fall Fiesta Tour over at Women and Words, so check in on Fridays for fun n’ games and GIVEAWAYS! YES!

This Friday, author Mary Vermillion stopped by to chat about her series starring radio host/sleuth Mara Gilgannon. Mary sets her mysteries in Iowa (which I think is super groovy). She also has a secret (okay, not so secret) identity as a professor of English and she teaches way cool classes like Law and Literature.

So come on by! She’ll be giving away a copy of her latest, Seminal Murder.

source

Here, Mara tries to solve the murder of her friend, Dr. Grace Everest, who was killed right in her own fertility clinic. She and Mara were working on a radio series together about artificial insemination, but someone is out to stop her. Is that someone the person who also killed Grace? Is it the reverend who’s been campaigning against the clinic and the radio station? Is it the person Mara’s buddy Vince invites over to their shared home? Or is it somebody else? And why do lesbians have a particularly low pregnancy rate at Grace’s clinic?

Come on by Women and Words on Friday and put your name in the hat to win it and find out!

Happy reading, happy writing, happy Wednesday!

Benefit Auction for Kara Leonardo

Hi, all–

I posted this same thing over at Women and Words. Nevertheless, I’m doing it here, too:

There’s a benefit auction going on until August 5th to benefit a woman named Kara Leonardo. Some of you may know her; she was very active on lesfic boards and FB in the past and has been an ardent supporter of lesfic. In February, she was involved in a car accident in which her partner was killed. Kara suffered serious injuries and is just now leaving rehab, but she’s facing another decision. She’s currently in Delaware, where she moved from Illinois to be with her partner. She’d like to stay in Delaware, but she doesn’t have many resources to help her do that. She may end up having to go back to Illinois, but again, resources are scarce for her. So the auction is to provide a bit of money for her to hopefully help her get settled.

ALL proceeds from the auction go to Kara.

You can read the specifics about Kara and the auction HERE.

Here’s the direct link to what books authors have offered for auction (it’s also accessible via the other link).

Thanks, and please share far and wide.

Two Words: Faith Hunter

Hi, folks–

I’d like you to check in with Women and Words this Friday, February 3rd. Especially if you read urban fantasy. Fab NYT bestselling author Faith Hunter graciously agreed to an interview with me, and it’ll be posted at Women and Words.

Spread the word, share the love. And join me in a case of the serious vay-puhs for such an occurrence!

Happy reading, happy writing!

Portland has all the cool stuff

SRSLY? Zombie apocalypse training? Are you freaking kidding me???

No, I am not. Portland is offering seminars.

Here’s the link, for reals.

There’s a vid at the link, too.

And once you get that training, Portland is the perfect place to write something about it!

The city sports the Attic Institute, a creative awesome-spot for writers.

and
The Willamette Writers.

And cool writers’ conferences like this one. And this one. And go here for even more listings.

So for those of you there, I’m a tad envious. Let me know how the zombie apocalypse training goes.
